Medical Recommendations

It is crucial that before attending an Ayahuasca retreat, you inform us of any health issues or special conditions you have. If you are taking any medications, you must let us know. Before arriving at the Ayahuasca ceremonies, participants usually have a scheduled video consultation with a physician. The doctor creates a personalized health record, documenting your health status and the medications you are taking. If necessary, the doctor may recommend reducing the dosage or temporarily discontinuing medications in preparation for the Ayahuasca retreat. It is important to understand that withholding any health information from the doctor may lead to complications during the retreat.
Certain medications are not compatible with Ayahuasca ceremonies. It is essential to allow enough time for your body to clear these medications from its systems before the ceremonies. We do not recommend abruptly stopping prescribed drugs (including antidepressants) without proper consultation with a doctor. The second part of the video consultation involves monitoring your mental state. We need to identify the internal objectives that you are bringing to the Ayahuasca retreat.
Medical Considerations for Ayahuasca Ceremonies
Cardiovascular System:
If you have a heart condition or chronic high blood pressure, Ayahuasca ceremonies are contraindicated.
Diabetes:
MAO inhibitors can affect the amount of insulin or oral anti-diabetic medication you may need. If you have diabetes, please inform us so we can discuss your specific case.
Antidepressants:
Any medications that affect the serotonin system, including SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), such as antidepressants, should be discontinued six weeks before Ayahuasca ceremonies to allow your system to clear. Some of these medications may cause side effects when you stop taking them, so it is essential to allow enough time for your body to adjust. Do not stop taking them abruptly without discussing it with a doctor.
Decongestants, Cold and Allergy Medications, Sedatives, Tranquilizers, Amphetamines, Certain Hypotensive Drugs, Sympathomimetic Amines, and Weight Loss Pills: These medications should be paused before the retreat.
